Our disasterous system
Sean Carroll at COSMIC VARIANCE has a great OPINION ARTICLE about the state of our educational system, with a link to the ATLANTIC ARTICLE that has more details.
The Atlantic article goes deep into practical ways to make good changes to the system. But for change to be made in such an entrenched environment, we as citizens have to demand that we want change. How do we get our voices heard? Certainly the presidential election has something to do with it, but it is more than that. We have to let our congresspeople and our senators and our local government officials know that it is a screaming priority.
Having lived in Los Angeles and now in Baltimore, I see not just the general ill effects of our insane educational system (poor test scores, poor performance in math and science, etc.,) but the inexcusable, criminally neglectful effects of it, as well: private schools that churn out little graduates who stroll the brick walkways of Johns Hopkins across the street from me, and underfunded, under-supported public schools that fail to provide even basic physical shelter or safety to students and churn out non-graduates who end up sitting on corners with their lives in the balance. The injustice is extraordinary.
We have to find ways to create a more public movement for educational reform.
